Joseph Ruby practices in the areas of insurance, reinsurance, and commercial disputes.  Over his twenty-five years of experience, Mr. Ruby has represented London and domestic insurers in coverage disputes involving environmental, toxic tort, and advertising injury, as well as representing insurers of bankrupt or insolvent insureds.  He has litigated insurance and reinsurance matters in state and federal courts, at trial, on appeal, and in arbitration.  He has also worked more broadly in general litigation, and including the representation of an overseas financial institution in litigation concerning a failed real estate investment and representation of the plaintiff in a dispute over the transfer of rights to a manufacturing process. 

Mr. Ruby lectures on insurance issues including bad faith claims and intellectual property coverage, and has conducted seminars and workshops in topics such as alternate dispute resolution and the handling of various types of claims.

Mr. Ruby has been recognized by Chambers USA (2008) as one of the top attorneys in Washington, D.C. for insurance matters.

Representative Matters

  •  Representations of London Market Insurers and U.S. domestic companies on matters involving coverage for liability arising from asbestos, lead, other health hazard,  pollution, and advertising injury.
  • Numerous representations, including trials of disputes among insurers on issues involving allocation, contribution, and subrogation claims.
  • Representation of an overseas financial institution in a dispute with a U.S. real estate company over an inaccurate and potentially fraudulent appraisal that induced the client to invest in a project that eventually failed.
  • Representation of a South American manufacturing company in a dispute with a U.S. company over performance of a contract concerning a technology transfer.
